Down Kim and Eunjin Lee become Asian MotoSurf Champions

MotoSurf Asian Championship returned to action and this time, the fastest motosurf racers from all over Asia competed in the capital of Srí Lanka in Colombo. Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo – wonderful hotel complex on the shores of Beira Lake offered great hospitality for hosting the MotoSurf event.

Racers competed in three categories, men and women singles as well as team challenge where riders from various nations competed for the best laptime of their team efforts. The weekend welcomed several well known racers from the MotoSurf World Championship including two Stock Class World Champions from 2021 and 2022 season – Marek Skamla from Slovakia and Down Kim from South Korea.

 

Eunjin Lee representing South Korea arrived to Srí Lanka as favorite for the Asian title after her super successful season in the World Championship where the likeable Korean marked her first ever podium finish in the Championship while finishing third in Italy.

The Team Challenge was an unpredictable guess but eventually, this category brought a lot a excitement and tight battles.

The men competition program started with qualifiying and heats where Thummasak Termchit Aree (Thailand) crossed the finish line in first place and led the weekend, Down Kim took 2nd and Matej Surkos 3rd. The second heat got under full control of Matej Surkos while Down Kim finished second. In the last heat, Down Kim experienced a technical issue and Matej Surkos took over the current leading.

One final shootout on the schedule put Down Kim under pressure to score victory if he wanted to even think about the overall victory. Down started well and strategic ride with no mistakes brought him victory in the finals and just a single point advantage over Matej Surkos who concluded the whole weekend in second. Thummasak Termchit – Aree made Thai colour very proud scoring the first ever MotoSurf international event podium for Thailand.

Women competition saw Eunjin Lee having a fantastic weekend starting with posting the fastest qualifying laptime as well as victory in all three heats. Kyoung Min Kim, likewise from South Korea, concluded the heats in second and Natalia Vasileva in third. In the final, Eunjin opened a comfortable gap and remained undefeated until crossing the checkered flag. Kyoung Min Kim took second and Natalia Vasileva concluded the weekend in third.

 

The Team Challenge saw a pair of riders of different origins and categories competing for the best sum of laptimes in two laps challenge including relay pass. The European duo, Alexander Strom (SWE) and Marek Skamla (SVK) stopped the clock on the fastest laptimes and claimed the victory. Daisuke Mamada (JPN) and Eunjin Lee (KOR) showed the second fastest team effort around the racetrack in Colombo as Grzegorz Dunat (POL) and Matej Surkos (CZE) completed the top three standings of the Teams classification.
